Havanese: Cheerful and Charming Cuban Companion

Havanese

History of the Havanese

The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba and a member of the ancient Bichon family of dogs, which includes the Bichon Frise, Maltese, and Bolognese. The breed’s roots can be traced back to Mediterranean trading ships in the 16th century, when small companion dogs were brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers and possibly Italian traders. Over time, these dogs evolved into the Havanese, named after Havana, the Cuban capital.
The breed quickly became popular among Cuban aristocracy, prized for its affectionate nature, luxurious coat, and sociability. When the Cuban Revolution occurred in the 1950s, many Havanese were brought to the U.S. with fleeing families. From this small population, the breed was preserved and flourished. It was recognized by the AKC in 1996 and is now one of the most beloved toy breeds in North America.
